Biryani is a flavorful and aromatic Indian rice dish packed with spices, meat, and fragrant basmati rice. It is a favorite dish for special occasions and gatherings.
Ingredients
- 2 cups basmati rice
- 1 pound chicken or lamb, cut into pieces
- 1 cup yogurt
- 2 onions, thinly sliced
- 2 tomatoes, chopped
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 inch ginger, grated
- 1 teaspoon turmeric
- 1 teaspoon cumin
- 1 teaspoon coriander powder
- 1 teaspoon garam masala
- 1/2 teaspoon chili powder
- 1/2 cup chopped fresh coriander leaves
- 1/2 cup fried onions
- 4 cups water
- Salt to taste
- Oil for cooking
- Rinse the basmati rice in cold water until the water runs clear. Soak the rice in water for 30 minutes.
- In a large pan, heat oil and fry the onions until golden brown. Remove half of the fried onions and set them aside for garnishing.
- Add garlic, ginger, and tomatoes to the pan. Cook until the tomatoes are soft.
- Add the chicken or lamb pieces to the pan along with turmeric, cumin, coriander powder, garam masala, chili powder, and salt. Cook until the meat is browned.
- Stir in the yogurt and cook for a few minutes.
- Drain the soaked rice and add it to the pan. Stir well.
- Pour in the water and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat, cover the pan, and let it simmer until the rice is cooked and the meat is tender.
- Once done, garnish the Biryani with chopped fresh coriander leaves and the reserved fried onions.
- Serve hot with raita and mango chutney. Enjoy your flavorful Biryani!
