Japanese
Tempura is a popular Japanese dish featuring lightly battered and deep-fried seafood or vegetables, resulting in a crispy and delicious dish.
Ingredients
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup cornstarch
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1 cup ice-cold water
- 1 egg, lightly beaten
- Assorted seafood (shrimp, squid, fish) and vegetables (sweet potato, bell pepper, broccoli) for frying
- Oil for deep frying (vegetable or canola)
- Dipping sauce (soy sauce, mirin, grated daikon, grated ginger)
- In a mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, and baking powder.
- Gradually whisk in the ice-cold water and beaten egg until the batter is smooth. Be careful not to overmix; lumps are okay.
- Heat the oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F (180°C).
- Dip the seafood or vegetables into the batter, ensuring they are fully coated.
- Carefully place the coated items into the hot oil and fry until they are golden brown and crispy. Fry in batches to avoid overcrowding.
- Remove the tempura with a slotted spoon or tongs and place them on a wire rack or paper towels to drain excess oil.
- Serve the tempura hot with the dipping sauce on the side. Enjoy your crispy and delicious tempura!
